are said to safely swim in numbers
when they hunt for food.

Most sightings are confirmed at sea
by passengers and crewmen;
some mermaids look uncannily
like strange, aquatic humans.

They were once attributed
to perils on the seas.
Their voices were believed to be
the cries of manatees.

Once thought to be enchantresses
who lured seafaring men,
seducing them to danger
with their songs, bewitching them.

The centuries-old romantic yarns
explorers spread about
were evidenced through photo lenses,
shaking early doubt.

Somewhere amid all seamen's tales,
the mermaids have their place.
They're mysteries of uncertainty,
yet, many still embrace.
